Barnes' Notes on the Bible

And the waters covered their enemies ... - Exodus 14:27-28; Exodus 15:5.

Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible

And the waters covered their enemies,.... They pursuing the Israelites into the sea, the waters returned, and covered Pharaoh and all his host, and drowned them, so that they sunk as a stone, and as lead into the bottom of the sea, Exodus 14:28.

There was not one of them left; to return back to Egypt, and give an account of what became of the army, Exodus 14:28, an emblem this of the utter destruction of all our spiritual enemies by Christ; who has not only saved us from them, but has entirely destroyed them; he has made an end of sin, even of all the sins of his people; he has spoiled Satan and his principalities and powers; he has abolished death, the last enemy, and made his saints more than conquerors over all. Likewise it may be a representation of the destruction of the wicked at the last day, who will be all burnt up at the general conflagration, root and branch, not one will be left; see Malachi 4:1.

Geneva Study Bible

And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

106:6-12 Here begins a confession of sin; for we must acknowledge that the Lord has done right, and we have done wickedly. We are encouraged to hope that though justly corrected, yet we shall not be utterly forsaken. God's afflicted people own themselves guilty before him. God is distrusted because his favours are not remembered. If he did not save us for his own name's sake, and to the praise of his power and grace, we should all perish.

Exodus 14:27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the LORD swept them into the sea.
Exodus 14:28 The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen--the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.
Exodus 15:5 The deep waters have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone.
Psalm 78:53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies.
Psalm 136:15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea; His love endures forever.
