Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible

And they cried out all at once,.... The chief priests, rulers, and people, not bearing to hear of a release of him, now they had got him in their hands; and enraged at the proposal, in a most clamorous way, cried out, as one man, immediately:

Saying, away with this man; to the cross; to Calvary, the place of execution; away with him out of the world; he is not fit to live:

and release unto us Barabbas; whose character is given in the next verse; See Gill on Matthew 27:16.

People's New Testament

23:18 Release to us Barabbas. See notes on Mt 27:15-26, for the choice of Barabbas rather than Christ.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

23:13-25 The fear of man brings many into this snare, that they will do an unjust thing, against their consciences, rather than get into trouble. Pilate declares Jesus innocent, and has a mind to release him; yet, to please the people, he would punish him as an evil-doer. If no fault be found in him, why chastise him? Pilate yielded at length; he had not courage to go against so strong a stream. He delivered Jesus to their will, to be crucified.

Matthew 27:15 Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.
Mark 15:6 Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested.
Luke 23:17
Luke 23:19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
John 18:16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
John 18:39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?"
John 19:15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.
Acts 3:14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you.
Acts 21:36 The crowd that followed kept shouting, "Away with him!"
