Barnes' Notes on the Bible

But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame - The report of what he had done. This was not unnatural for them. They were so filled with joy that they could not repress their feelings. In this, however, they violated the express command of the Saviour; but he was not responsible for that.

Clarke's Commentary on the Bible

But they - spread abroad his fame - They should have held their peace; for to obey is better than sacrifice, 1 Samuel 15:22; but man must always be wiser than God, however, it may be profitable to remark,

1st. That honor pursues those who fly from it.

2dly. He who is thoroughly sensible of God's mercy cannot long contain his acknowledgments.

3dly. That God in general requires that what a man has received, for his own salvation, shall become subservient to that of others - Let your light so shine, etc.

God chooses to help man by man, that all may be firmly knit together in brotherly love.

Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible

But they, when they were departed,.... That is, out of the house where they received their cure, and out of the city; for it appears, by what follows, they went into other parts, where it is probable they might originally belong; they

spread abroad his fame in all that country. This they did, not in contempt of Christ and his orders; but rather out of gratitude to their benefactor, and through an honest zeal to spread his honour and glory: though they are not to be commended for disregarding the command of Christ; for, not our affection, but Christ's will, is to be the rule of our actions.

Geneva Study Bible

But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.

People's New Testament

9:30,31 Jesus straitly charged them, etc. Their changed condition would sufficiently tell the story without their indiscreet babbling. They failed to obey, which they should have done, whether they understood the reason of the command or not. Note the three great lessons about our Lord: (1) He is the Life (Joh 11:25 14:6). He not only breaks the bonds of mortal death, but endows the soul with spiritual life. (2) He is the infallible Physician (Mr 2:17 Lu 5:31,32). Diseases of the body, sorrows of the heart, and sins of the soul that no man can heal, disappear at his touch. (3) He is the Light of the world (Joh 8:12). At his word sightless eyes see. At his word darkened souls are flooded with light.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

31. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country-(See on [1245]Mt 8:4).

A Dumb Demoniac Healed (Mt 9:32-34).

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

9:27-31 At this time the Jews expected Messiah would appear; these blind men knew and proclaimed in the streets of Capernaum that he was come, and that Jesus was he. Those who, by the providence of God, have lost their bodily sight, may, by the grace of God, have the eyes of their understanding fully enlightened. And whatever our wants and burdens are, we need no more for supply and support, than to share in the mercy of our Lord Jesus. In Christ is enough for all. They followed him crying aloud. He would try their faith, and would teach us always to pray, and not to faint, though the answer does not come at once. They followed Christ, and followed him crying; but the great question is, Do ye believe? Nature may make us earnest, but it is only grace that can work faith. Christ touched their eyes. He gives sight to blind souls by the power of his grace going with his word, and he puts the cure upon their faith. Those who apply to Jesus Christ, shall be dealt with, not according to their fancies, nor according to their profession, but according to their faith. Christ sometimes concealed his miracles, because he would not indulge the conceit which prevailed among the Jews, that their Messiah should be a temporal prince, and so give occasion to the people to attempt tumults and seditions.

Matthew 14:1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
Matthew 28:15 So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.
Mark 1:28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
Mark 1:45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
Luke 4:14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.
Luke 4:37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
Luke 5:15 Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
Luke 7:17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
